Transforming Public Images into Cultural Art

Rachel Schmeidler is a Los Angeles–based multidisciplinary artist whose work critically examines celebrity culture, collective memory, and the complex relationship between public fascination and private failure. Working across painting, silkscreen, photography, sculpture, and digital media, Schmeidler transforms culturally charged source material into meticulously crafted works that blur the boundaries between documentation, spectacle, and fine art.

Born in Israel and raised between Germany and the United States, Schmeidler’s early life was shaped by constant geographic and cultural transitions. These experiences fostered a deep awareness of identity, displacement, and the way societies construct narratives around individuals—particularly those elevated or condemned in the public eye. 

She later earned her degree from Carnegie Mellon University, where she developed a strong foundation in both traditional fine art practices and experimental media.

Schmeidler is best known for her provocative use of found imagery—most notably celebrity mugshots—which she recontextualizes to challenge notions of fame, morality, and collective judgment. By applying labor-intensive artistic processes to images designed for rapid consumption, she slows down the viewer’s gaze and invites reflection on why society is so deeply invested in the downfall of its icons.
