Jim Morrison – The Lizard King

The Doors’ frontman constantly tested the boundaries of the law, becoming the first rock star to be arrested on stage during a performance.

  • 1967: In a historic incident in New Haven, Connecticut, police sprayed mace on Morrison backstage. When he recounted the story to the audience during the show and mocked the police, they stormed the stage. He was arrested mid-performance and charged with inciting a riot, indecency, and public obscenity.

  • 1968: He was arrested in Las Vegas for public drunkenness and vagrancy after a scuffle with security guards outside a club.

  • 1969: His most infamous legal battle occurred in Miami. During a chaotic concert at the Dinner Key Auditorium, he was accused of exposing himself to the crowd. He was later convicted of indecent exposure and open profanity, and sentenced to six months in jail.

  • The End: Morrison remained free on bail while appealing the Miami conviction. He moved to Paris, where he died in 1971 at age 27, before serving any time. In 2010, the Governor of Florida posthumously pardoned him.
